Maui

Maui

Maui is the second-largest island in Hawaii. It is a popular island for those adventure seekers like ourselves, and there is a little bit of everything for every age.

We decided to stay in Kihei as we prefer the quiet and non-crowded, tourist areas. Kihei did that for us and we enjoyed the pace of life here. We visited in January during the low season which allowed us to avoid the holiday crowd and save money. In fact, wherever we travel, we try to visit during low season. After renting a car, we were ready to explore the whole island! Here are some of our favorite things to do in Maui.

Take a Fun Road Trip to the Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a must when you visit Maui. Driving this 2.5 hour curvy road is tons of fun plus you get to stop anywhere you want and go at your own pace! Make sure you have a full tank of gas before going on this adventure. Be aware that there are narrow single lane roads. We didn’t think it was as bad of a drive as it is advertised or as people make you believe. It was raining in the morning but we were not discouraged to go on a drive. The rain made the waterfalls look even more beautiful and full.

One of our favorite spots to stop for lunch was Koki Beach. We brought snacks and sandwiches with us and had the most beautiful picnic with a gorgeous ocean view.

Wai’anapanapa State Park has a scenic black-sand beach that will take your breath away. There are also caves which are accessible once stepping foot on the beach and you can even see a blowhole if you follow the trails.

Sunrise at Haleakala Crater

The most amazing and memorable sunrise that we’ve experienced together has been the sunrise at the Haleakala Crater. We woke up at 4 in the morning to drive to the crater along with dozens of other adventurous souls. It was freezing and windy but that did not stop us from witnessing this breathtaking scene. It is a good idea to bring gloves, a hooded jacket, and while you’re at it even a blanket to keep yourself warm! After anxiously waiting, we were finally able to witness the miracle of another day as the sun rose above the clouds. Being 10,000 feet above sea level made it magical to experience the dark sky fading away and the light of the day appearing after our eyes. Waking up early was definitely worth it! Be aware that there is a toll gate and there is a charge of $20 dollars per car when driving up to the crater.

Lavender Farm

After the beautiful sunrise, we headed out to the Alii Kula Lavender Farm. It was the perfect thing to do after such a godly experience. For just $3 dollars per person, we got to explore the beautiful and relaxing farm. They have guided walking and cart tours, or you can always explore on your own, which is what we did. You can catch scents of lavender as you walk through the beautiful paths. To warm up a bit, we enjoyed some lavender tea with lavender scones on the terrace overlooking the Maui horizon. The gardens are unique and fun. There are cool activities including a scavenger hunt for children and adults to enjoy. We highly recommend this gem when you visit Maui!

Experience a Romantic Evening at a Luau

When in Hawaii, you have to attend a traditional Luau. We highly recommend the Old Lahaina Luau located in Lahaina as we had a beautiful experience there. You have to make a reservation ahead of time as these Hawaiian parties are very popular and no one wants to miss them. We were greeted with a beautiful lei and a mai tai. The hosts are highly professional and friendly. Our table host remembered all of the names of the people in our table. We were impressed! Prior to dinner, there were lots of fun activities and musicians playing throughout. Tropical drinks are served the whole night at your request included with your reservation. The Hawaiian food is amazing and served buffet-style. After dinner, you’ll be able to enjoy the music and professional award-winning hula dancing. It is definitely an evening to remember so be sure to check it out!

Snorkel at Molokini Crater

For a fun day adventure, book a cruise to the Molokini Crater. We got to swim with the sea turtles and view lots of color fishes. The ocean water was cold but we were too committed to swimming with the turtles. Our bodies got used to the water after the first ten minutes. However you don’t have to be as brave as we were, most cruises have the body suits that you can rent if you feel you need extra protection to last longer in the ocean. This is such a cool place to snorkel and a great activity to do for the whole family.

Enjoy a Shaved Ice at Lahaina’s Old Banyan Tree

Lahaina was a bit too overcrowded for our taste. However, we trekked there to see the magnificent Banyan tree located in the historical Lahaina town. The tree is impressive and beautiful. Banyan trees are originally from India and are known to grow many trunks around the main trunk. If you walk at night, you’ll be able to hear the loud cries from the birds making their way back to their branches. It is quite amusing!
