COSTA RICA – Hike Up The Active Arenal Volcano

Hike Up The Active Arenal Volcano

POSTED ON FEBRUARY 25, 2019

When in Costa Rica, you cannot miss a volcano hike. Your trip is just not complete as Costa Rica is characterized by the many volcanoes throughout the country. One of the most popular and most recognized volcano is Arenal. Arenal volcano is a symmetrical cone-shaped volcano, just like the ones kids draw when you ask them to draw a picture of a volcano.

Arenal volcano is currently active. We learnt from our tour guide that the last time the volcano threw rocks and lava was back in 2010. In 1968, Arenal volcano’s eruption completely destroyed two nearby towns: Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacon.

We hiked around the lower part of the volcano as you cannot get close to the top of the volcano for obvious reasons. We had a guided tour and hiked for about two hours. The hike was a bit strenuous as there were some rocky, slippery, and steep areas. Let’s remember, you are walking on old lava fields and that’s part of the excitement.

Once you get through the challenging trails, the views are breathtaking. The beauty of the volcano’s flora and fauna is something you need to see for yourself. Our guide was amazing in spotting all the cool birds, snakes, and spiders.

We were able to see the famous green lagoon and admire the beauty of it from high above. The photos don’t do any justice. You just need to see it for yourself. Overall, it was an unforgettable and exciting adventure in Costa Rica.

TIP: Bring a rain jacket, an umbrella and comfortable hiking shoes.
