Visiting The Amazing Arbol Del Tule

POSTED ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2017

Arbol del Tule is located in the small and mellow town of Santa Maria del Tule, just 20 minutes away from Oaxaca City. To get there take, highway 190 on the road to Mitla. The town is so inviting and charming.

We were able to find free parking right in front of the plaza. The plaza is very clean and the gardens are beautiful. There are shops and friendly street vendors selling anything from traditional bread, chocolate, and colorful figurines to colorful shawls and clothes.

The town is so relaxing that invites visitors to hang out and enjoy a homemade ice cream while admiring the beauty of the tule tree. For a few pesos, we enjoyed crema de mezcal and vanilla ice cream flavors.

There is a fee of $10 pesos per person to enter and view the massive Montezuma Cypress tree.

There are children guides that will point out different figures or animals on the tree. If you use your imagination, you will see these cool figures too. Look out for the lion heads, an elephant, a witch, a crocodile, snakes and more.

The historic tule tree is approximately 2,000 to 3,000 years old. The diameter of the trunk measures about 46 feet making it the widest tree in the world. This spectacular tree was once thought to be multiple trees but after a DNA analysis, it was found to be just one single tree.

We highly recommend visiting this site! You can sit on a bench under the shade of this beautiful tree and admire this Zapotec tree that has seen many generations come and go.
